Riga, the capital of Latvia, is located on the banks of the Daugava River. The city has many interesting museums, concert halls, old sights and national parks. In the center there are wooden houses of the XVIII-XIX centuries and buildings in the style of Riga Art Nouveau. With its architecture, Riga is reminiscent of the Middle Ages: narrow stone-paved streets, one-story buildings and numerous shops with sweets. Livu Square from 20:00 to 06:00 there are bars and nightclubs.
Stroll through the Town Hall Square, where the XIV century Blackheads' house stands. Its brick facade is framed by white marble stucco, creating the feeling that the building is decorated with delicate lace. Previously, organizational meetings were held here, now the Historical Museum is operating. Next to it stands the monument to Rolonda, as a symbol of the economic and political independence of Latvia. 5 minutes walk from it is the oldest church of St. Peter with a spire, which is visible from anywhere in Old Riga. Be sure to climb the observation deck of the cathedral: from a height of 72 meters offers a stunning view of the surroundings.
If you aren’t tired of inspecting the capital, walk to the Dome Square, which is considered the heart of the city. Here stands the Dome Cathedral, bringing together the architectural styles of the XVII-XVIII centuries. Inside the temple rises a 25-meter organ, the sound of which is considered one of the best in the world. If you want to see the neighboring cities, rent a car with a driver in Riga.
What is it to move about? Daily from 08:30 to 22:00 buses, minibuses, trolley buses and trams ply. They connect the center with the outskirts of Riga and its surroundings. Tickets are valid in all types of public transport: they are bought directly from the drivers. On weekends from 23:30 to 05:00 there are minibuses. Taxi in Riga is expensive, so the locals hardly use it. If you need to get to the hotel or airport, book in advance transfer. It will be cheaper and faster. Enjoy your holiday!
