Transfer options from Mexico City International Airport to the city center
Planning to explore Mexico city? You won’t be disappointed. In fact, you’ll be surprised by its rich culture, which takes its roots from one of the most advanced ancient civilizations — Aztecs. This vibrant city will astonish you by the way its contemporary life naturally intertwines with its ancient history. It will be a bright mark within your collection of travel experiences.
Your introduction to Mexico City starts at Benito Juarez International Airport, which is also called Mexico City Airport. Situated about 10 km east of Mexico city, it is the largest and busiest airport in Latin America, serving flights to and from more than 100 destinations worldwide.
So how exactly to reach the city center from the airport?
There are four ways to do that, from the longest to the quickest.
Metro
If you’re traveling on a budget, Metro is the right choice being the cheapest, but at the same time also the slowest option to the city center. The train ride takes about 50 minutes.
Metro Line 5 is connected to the airport's Terminal 1. You need to walk out of the terminal to Aerea Station.
It’s essential to know that huge luggage is not allowed in the metro. Besides, if it’s your first time in the city and you don’t know the language, better arrange for your transfer from the airport to the city. The risk of getting lost in an unknown city or getting into trouble during your first day is too high. Don’t take that chance, it’s not worth it.
Journey time: 50 minutes
Cost: $0.20
Shared minivan
Taking a minivan only makes sense if you’re traveling with a group of people. Otherwise you can order a taxi, cause the cost of the ride is just about the same. But it will take you twice as long by a shared minivan. In fact, you might as well order a transfer for your big company, friends and family with a high level of comfort and service. Journey time: 30-50 minutes
Cost: $8.50 to the city center; $14.50 to the outlying areas
Metrobus
Metrobuses are located outside both airport’s terminals. They operate from 5 AM until midnight. This way of reaching the city center is the most preferable out of those above, as it’s more safe, not time consuming and cheap as well. The bus will get you to your final destination — Republica de Argentina stop, which is close to the city’s main square called Zocalo. There are two other bus stations within the city center — Republica de Chile and Teatro Blanquita. Which one to choose depends on where in the city you’re staying. Check your hotel’s address in advance.
Journey time: 45 minutes
Cost: $1.40
Taxi/Transfer
This is the most convenient and safe way of reaching the city center by far. It is also the quickest one. It’s the most expensive compared to other modes of transportation: $14.50 or $15 for a taxi from the airport to your hotel. All the taxis at Benito Juárez International Airport work on a prepaid system.
You can also consider booking a transfer, thus you could even save a buck.
