Poland is a remarkable place for a vacation. The northern part of the country is washed by the Baltic Sea with Tatra mountains at the southern border. In winter the local ski resorts attract a lot of tourists. The population of Zakopane, the most southern town in the country, triples during the season.
Travelling to Zakopane? Polish public transport system is well-developed, you can take a bus here from almost anywhere. You can also travel by train from Krakov, which will take you 4 hours, or take a 2-hour drive. A lot of tourists prefer to book a transfer, it is especially convenient since it’s easy, safe, and more comfortable than a bus.
Zakopane ski resort is well-known outside Poland too. The season lasts from December to April. There are actually 4 smaller resorts that are combined into the Grand Zakopane area. The pistes are marked with international difficulty ratings. You can find black pistes in Nosal or Kasprowy Wierch resorts. The latter also holds international ski-jumping as well as other winter sports competitions. Harenda and Bialka Tatrzanska are more suited for beginners. To travel between the resorts you will have to take a car, each of them operates separately. There is no unified ski pass, you will have to purchase one for each of the resorts.
The weather in Zakopane during the winter holidays is usually fine. Most days are sunny, rarely cloudy with the lowest temperature of –10 °C.
Hiking trips to the countryside or to Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea in English) mountain lake are especially popular in summer. Here you can also find some historical monuments. The Chocholow village is a national heritage site 17 kilometres from Zakopane. Here you can buy authentic items as souvenirs in local shops and see the traditional wooden houses. On your way there visit the church of Our Lady of Fátima. Here you will see the stained glass windows and a lot of religious sculptures. This journey will definitely be easier with a car. If you don’t have one yourself, just hire a driver with a car in Zakopane.
