Clean and cosy Vitebsk is the third-largest city in Belarus and one of the main cultural centres of the country. It is known worldwide as the birthplace of the famous artist Marc Chagall.
There are several ways to get to Vitebsk. The simplest one is by train from neighbouring countries: Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and Poland. Instead of a train, you can take a bus — this option will be the most economical. Near the city, there is a small airport Vitebsk-Vostochny, which you can reach by tourist transfer or taxi to Vitebsk. Keep in mind that passenger planes fly to the airport only in summer during the tourist season.
The city is famous for its temples, history and cultural life. People interested in art will find a lot of things to see in Vitebsk. Marc Chagall, one of the top avant-garde artists of the 20th century, was born and lived a significant part of his life here. In Vitebsk, there is an artist's house-museum where one can find the largest collections of his paintings. The art centre of Marc Chagall was opened recently in honour of the famous avant-gardist. Vitebsk Art Museum is one of the main centres of fine arts in Belarus. There is a large collection of paintings of famous Russian artists: Isaac Levitan, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Vasily Perov, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin and others.
The niveous Dormition Cathedral is the main city temple. It is known for its tragic centuries-old history and excellent views of the city from the Assumption Mountain.
In the vicinity of Vitebsk, there is a memorial museum-estate of the famous painter of the 19th-century Russian realist school Ilya Repin "Zdravnevo". There you can see a permanent exhibition of the artist's personal belongings and many of his reproductions. You can get to the museum by taxi or by bus from the city bus station. To get there faster and with comfort, can rent a car with a driver in advance in Vitebsk and get to the estate in just 25 minutes.
The best time for visiting the city is late spring, early autumn and summer. At this time, the weather in Vitebsk is the most comfortable for walking. If you want to visit it in summer, be sure to come in July. The International Festival of Arts “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” is held in July. The modern Summer Amphitheatre hosts many concerts. Performances and exhibitions of folk art masters are organized in the streets. Also during the festival, little shops are set up where you can buy a variety of souvenirs and local craftsmen's products.
