From these countries, you can get to the capital of Macedonia by train or by bus. In addition, there is the international airport "Alexander the Great" 20 km from Skopje where planes fly from major European cities. Buses and minibuses run every two hours from the airport to the historical centre. If you don't want to wait too long, you can take a taxi or book a transfer.
All of Skopje's main attractions are located in the Old Town on the left bank of the Vardar River. You will find a lot of museums, monuments, beautiful mosques and cosy narrow streets there. The Kale Fortress, which was built by the Byzantines, is one of the most ancient sights of Macedonia. Now on its territory, there is a favourite park for tourists and locals. Kale is located on Hradiste Hill and offers a wonderful panoramic view of the historical centre.
The main symbol of the city is the stone bridge over the Vardar River. The story of its building is enigmatic. Some people believe, the bridge was built in the 6th century by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, while others say that its construction began in the times of the Roman Empire. Anyway, now it is impossible to imagine Skopje without its symbol.
If you are interested in art, be sure to visit the Macedonian National Gallery. You can not only get acquainted with the works of Byzantine and Macedonian artists but also see a unique collection of iconography there. In addition, the museum pays tourists attention to contemporary art — there is a large exposition of abstract paintings and a special hall dedicated to cinematography.
Skopje is situated between the picturesque Skopska Crna Ridge and the Vodno Mountains, so you can go on a trip outside the city.
