Transfer from Orlando International Airport
Flying into Orlando International Airport. Options for getting around the city
If your travel destination is Orlando, Florida, then you are most probably planning to have some fun time at Disney World, because that’s what Orlando is best known for across the globe.
Rightfully so, Orlando holds the title of The Theme Park Capital of the World, as its unrivaled collection of incredible theme parks attracts dozens of millions of people around the world every year. Apart from The Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando is also a home to Universal Studios Resort, which is as much a tourist attraction as Mickey's own residency.
But theme parks are not the only reason people visit Orlando. It is also home to iconic skyscrapers, sports centers, theaters, art galleries, shopping centers and parks.
But before visiting Orlando’s landmarks comes its airport system. Orlando is served by two main commercial airports:
- Orlando International Airport (MCO)
- Sanford International Airport (SFB)
In this article, we take a closer look at Orlando International Airport system and its Downtown transfer opportunities. The airport is located 10 km southeast of Orlando, which makes it the closest to the city. It is regarded as the 4th largest airport in the U.S. Around 50 million passengers pass through its doors every year, which makes it the 10th busiest airport in the country.
There’s only one MCO terminal at the moment. Another one is currently being built, and it is expected to open during 2022. The Main Terminal has two areas: the northern Side A and the southern Side B.
Before deciding on transportation, we recommend checking whether your hotel offers a complimentary free airport shuttle, because it’s a common thing in Orlando. Hotel shuttle pickup is located on the B-side of the Arrivals Terminal, on Level 1. In case your hotel doesn’t offer a free shuttle, there are many other options to get around.
Bus
For those traveling light, and on a budget, taking a bus will be just the solution.
Orlando’s Lynx bus service provides transportation from the airport to Downtown.
Bus 11 will take you to South Orange Avenue, which is right in the city center.
Ticket is $2, which is the cheapest option so far. Lynx bus 11 runs every 30 minutes out of the Terminal 1, A-side. Check the Lynx website for a full departure schedule of the bus 11. The journey time varies, depending on the traffic, it can take from 45 to 65 minutes.
Despite being the cheapest option, taking a bus after a long international flight is quite tiring. It gets even more inconvenient lugging your heavy bags on a bus. Most visitors opt to take a hotel shuttle, taxi or transfer to their destination.
Train
Unfortunately, Orlando’s train service is not directly connected to the airport. In order to get to the train station, take a Lynx Bus 11 to the Sand Lake Road SunRail Station, which makes it a 20-minute ride. SunRail is central Florida’s commuter rail service that also serves the Orlando city area. The train will get you to the Lynx Central SunRail Station, located downtown Orlando.
Note to self: SunRail operates Monday-Friday from 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM and is not available on weekends. SunRail one-way tickets cost $2, journey time - 20 minutes. So what do we have in total?
Tickets: $4
Journey time: 40+ minutes
We wouldn’t recommend taking this option, as it might get confusing navigating Orlando’s public transport system for the first time.
Taxi / Transfer
Getting a taxi is the least stressful and quickest way to reach Downtown Orlando. MCO has two taxi queues, one each in Terminals A and B on the Ground Transportation level. Usually the journey time is 25-50 minutes, depending on the traffic. The cost of a taxi ride from the airport might be from $40 to $75.
Taking a taxi can be pricey, but there is a way to spare some money and have all the benefits a taxi can offer. You should consider booking a transfer.
We recommend GetTransfer, as it offers the best prices in the area. In case you don’t agree with the company’s pricing, you can offer yours, which is pretty convenient.
For a group of four and more people, GetTransfer can find you a vehicle that suits the size of your company with all the baggage you have. Another sweet little bonus is that you can share the ride cost, which is beneficial for everyone.
For families and passengers with massive luggage, getting a suitable vehicle on GetTransfer is a lifesaver. You won’t have to worry about your heavy belongings or your children getting lost on public transport. GetTransfer is a stress-free experience.
Forget about expensive yellow cabs or confusing subway lines. GetTransfer will get you in comfort and no fuss to any point in the city.
The journey time will take up to 50 minutes, depending on the traffic. But with GetTransfer the time will fly by while you’ll be exploring Orlando from your passenger seat.
