Odense is Denmark's third-largest city located on the charming island of Funen. It is a major industrial and cultural centre of Denmark as well as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. The city was named after the nearest Odense fjord.
Despite the fact that it’s an island, there are many ways to get there. The easiest way to get to Odense is by train or by bus from Copenhagen. You can also fly to Billund and get to your destination by bus in an hour and a half. If you want to save time, book a transfer to Odense in advance.
The city's attractions include numerous monuments, museums and ancient buildings. Egeskov Castle is considered to be one of the best-preserved Renaissance buildings in the world. The current owner, Count Alefeld, made a great contribution to the development and preservation of the castle. He restored a significant part of the castle and opened a museum of rare cars and toys nearby. It will be interesting to come with a guide here in order to learn the history of the castle.
It is worth to visit the museum of the famous Danish storyteller. In the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, you will see an extensive exposition of the writer's personal belongings and learn a lot about his biography and work. In the neighbourhood, there is the Tinderbox Cultural and Entertainment Centre which you should visit if you are travelling with children. Here, the magical world of Andersen is presented in the form of theatre plays and games where children can participate and feel like protagonists of fairy tales.
The streets are also a landmark of the city. Due to the cute "gingerbread" architecture, the entire historical centre is soaked in a magical and cosy atmosphere. There are dozens of sculptures on the streets dedicated to Andersen's fairy tales. If you want to learn more about the history of the city, take a guided tour in Odense.
The former Brandt Textile Factory now houses the main art and cultural centre of Odense which consists of a media and photography museum. The media museum is dedicated to the history of print and electronic media in Denmark. Thanks to special exhibitions and the main exposition with modern installations, you can get a lively idea of the media and their development in Scandinavia.
You'll love Andersen's homeland in any season. However, the best decision will be to come here in the summer. This time of the year, Odense has the best weather for hiking and picnics. What is more, the whole Scandinavia celebrates International Fjord Day on July 12th.
Odense is a fantastic city that you should visit while in Denmark. Plan your route in advance and travel with comfort!
