When choosing a place to stay, pay attention to the ancient Chilean city on the Pacific coast. Today, people come here to see the ancient monuments of architecture and art, to taste the national wine in small private wineries and relax on the best beaches of La Serena.
The most popular place is the 8-kilometre recreation area of Avenida del Mar, where not only Chileans from all over the country, but also tourists come here. The season begins in January and lasts until mid-July, the air temperature warms up to +26 °C, and the water — up to +21 °C. The outlet to the water is flat, without sharp corals and stones, the bottom is sandy, so adults and children really like this place. The main seaport of Coquimbo, with fishing boats and cruise liners, is 5 to 10-minute walk away.
What to see in La Serena? People come here not only for recreation on the Pacific coast but also for fascinating historical excursions. Go to the ancient centre, where many colonial-style buildings have been preserved. For example, the House of the mint where the Museum of the coinage of silver coins of Chile opened. In La Serena, there are 29 churches, among which the most famous was the Cathedral in the neoclassical style of 1856. The symbol of the city is the sea lighthouse Faro. From its observation deck, you can enjoy stunning views of the city, the surrounding area, and the Pacific ocean. Visit the Archaeology Museums, the Gallery of religious art or the exhibition of Mineralogy, Ignacio Domeyko. What is carriageable more to move around the city? Buses connecting the centre with the far areas run daily from 09:00 to 22:00. Taxi in La Serena is quite expensive, drivers purposely choose the longest route.
