If you are interested in history, there will be a lot of things for you to see in the city of Niš — dozens of historical monuments and museums are located in the city. It is better to start discovering the city with the main sights: the Chele Kula skull tower, the Niš fortress and the Chegar monument. The Niš fortress, which was founded by the Romans, is located in the very centre of the city. The entrance is free. The Chegar Monument and the Chele Kula Skull Tower are very important places for the Balkans. They were built in memory of those who died during the uprising against the Ottoman Empire.
Next to the Niš fortress, there is another important historical site — the former concentration camp Red Cross. The territory of the concentration camp is open to the public. If you would like to learn more about how World War II affected Serbia, take a tour and visit the Buban Memorial Complex which was built in memory of the Serbs executed by the Nazis.
The most important archaeological site in Niš is Mediana. Previously there was the imperial residence of Constantine the Great, but now there are archaeological excavations. Keep in mind that there is no entrance to the Mediana in winter.
