Transfer to the airport of Fiumicino

You can easily get from Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to the center of Rome in several ways:

  • Public transport: bus or train
  • Advantages: cheap and cheerful
  • Disadvantages: less comfortable than transfer or taxi, crowded, inconvenient with many pieces of luggage.
  • Taxi, transfer service or car rental
  • Advantages: fast, individual, luxurious
  • Disadvantages: comfort is costly

Buses from Fiumicino run from 05:00 AM till 02:00 AM, with an average interval of 20-30 minutes, depending on a transport company.

You can find bus stops near T2 and T3 terminals. There are four terminals:

  • Т1 — domestic and inter-Schengen flights (Alitalia, AirFrance, KLM, etc.)
  • Т2 — charter and low-cost airlines (Wizzair, EasyJet, etc.)
  • Т3 — main international terminal
  • Т5 — flights to USA, Israel and Asian countries

These terminals are interconnected by free shuttle buses. We didn’t forget about T4 terminal, it will be built.Any bus takes you to Roma Termini station. Depending on a bus, bus stops are SIT bus station, Via Giovanni Giolitti 34 and Via Marsala 5.

You can buy a bus ticket online, at the airport ticket office, or from the driver.

Appropriate alternative with average comfort level for travelling light and without small kids.

Tips: It would be less costly to exchange currency before the trip. But if you arrived without euro, you can exchange at a bureau de change in Rome, cambio. Banks or Cassa di risparmio are open until 4:00 PM.

Different kinds of trains can take you to the center of Rome: from high-speed Leonardo Express, Frecciarossa, Frecciargento to regional train, Regionale.

Trains run from 6:00 AM till midnight, depending on their type.

High-speed train is faster and more expensive, it is 30 minutes for €14 and more against an hour for €8 on a regional one.

Leonardo Express , Frecciarossa and Frecciargento trains arrive to Termini railway station.

Regional train stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina railway stations.

All the trains leave from Fiumicino Airport railway station. Leonardo Express takes from track 2.

Tickets can be purchased on Trenitalia web-site or at the airport ticket office. Remember to print out your electronic ticket, just in case!

Appropriate alternative for travelling alone, in a small group and small amount of luggage.

Taxi from Fiumicino airport is costly, more than €50. Please consider that price is higher from 22:00 till 06:00 and can increase more on weekend and holidays.

You can also drive a rented car from the airport to Rome. Book a rental car without a driver in advance or at the airport. Basic insurance is included in the price. Your foreign passport, driver’s license and driving experience of at least 1 year are mandatory, as well as booking confirmation in case of online booking.

Two important factors to consider:

  • the driver has to be over the age of 21
  • you can drive only within EC borders

Familiarize yourself with local traffic rules. There are heavy traffic fines in Italy.
