Haarlem seems a small and quiet town in comparison to Amsterdam. Nevertheless, it is the fourth most populated and visited city in the country. Also, Haarlem is considered to be the origin point of the Flemish art style which is called one of the best in the world.
There is no airport in Haarlem but the city is just 20 km away from the Amsterdam airport so you can leave either from the capital or from the airport. Either way, the road takes only 15 minutes on a bus or train. If you have a lot of luggage, it’s better to book a taxi or a transfer.
Some tourists prefer hotels of Harlem to the capital ones. It’s also nearby but it is more pleasant to return to a quiet and calm place in the evening. Haarlem hotels are also much cheaper.
If you are not sure what to see in Haarlem, start from the Market Square. Here stands the oldest architectural monument –– XIII century city guard quarters. After that, visit St. Bavon church. You can find it but its distinctive spire, which can be seen from anywhere in the city. Inside stands the pipe organ that Mozart himself played.
Another peculiar landmark can be found nearby –– a sitting bench shaped as both A and Z letters. Locals are adamant that it was in Haarlem that movable type printing was invented and that bench was installed in honor of it. Make sure to visit the XVIII century train station building. Inside you can find the oldest coffee shop. Alternatively, visit the local church where they brew beer in accordance to the XVI century traditions.
While windy, the weather in Haarlem is quite warm. The average temperature in July is +21°C. The city is a popular vacation destination because the sea is just 10km away.
