Aarhus is Denmark's second-largest city and a major port centre which combines the spirit of a large metropolis with the comfort and cosiness of a small Danish settlement.
There are several ways to get to Aarhus. Trains and buses go there from Copenhagen, Berlin and Hamburg every day. What is more, there is an international airport where planes fly from many European countries. It takes 45 minutes to get from the airport to the historic centre by bus. To save time, book a transfer to Aarhus or take a taxi.
You can find many interesting places in the city that everyone will like. The National open-air museum of Den Gamle By is called one of the most educational sights in Denmark. The museum looks like a district which consists of 75 different buildings: schools, houses, workshops and others. If you are interested in history, be sure to visit the Moesgaard Museum. It has one of the richest ethnographic and archaeological exhibitions in the world. Children will like this museum too, as some of the exhibits can be played with.
One of the largest art museums in the world, Aros, will be appreciated even by those who don’t like art. You will find here unusual installations with optical illusions, voice and video effects in addition to classical paintings and sculptures. On the roof, there is a circular rainbow panorama. It is a circular corridor with glass walls painted in all the colours of the rainbow. From there, you can enjoy a great view of the city.
In the vicinity of Aarhus, there is the famous Deer Park. It belongs to the Marseilles-Borg Nature Reserve. You will have a unique opportunity to chat and take pictures with reindeer in their natural habitat here. Don't forget to bring apples and carrots to feed the animals. The park can be reached by bus or by car.
The best season for visiting is definitely summer. In the summer months, the air temperature varies between +18 and +22 °C and there is almost no rainfall. If you want to visit the city in winter, come there at the end of December. The weather in Aarhus will be quite cold at this time, but there will be Christmas trees all over the centre and many buildings will have beautiful Christmas lights.
You can travel around the city by bus and tram. Taxis in Aarhus, like in other Scandinavian countries, are not cheap. However, all the basic mobile applications for ordering taxis are available in Denmark. You can use them to save some money. The most popular transport among the locals is a bicycle. You can rent it to feel like a real Danish.
